Getting There
Reaching Kalbarri National Park is part of the adventure, with the journey cutting through some of Western Australia’s most striking coastal and inland landscapes. If you’re travelling from Perth, expect a long drive of slightly over 6 hours without breaks. To make the most of your day in the park without feeling rushed, it’s strongly recommended to break the journey in Geraldton the night before. This coastal city is the perfect halfway stop, offering plenty of accommodation, dining options, and a relaxed waterfront to unwind before continuing north. From Geraldton, it’s roughly 2 hours further north to Kalbarri National Park, making it a comfortable morning drive into the gorge region.
If you’re already exploring further up the coast, the park is also accessible from Hamelin Pool (around 3 hours’ drive) or from Denham (around 4 hours’ drive). For travellers coming from northern Western Australia, it’s recommended to base yourself overnight in either Hamelin Pool or Denham before heading down to Kalbarri. No matter your direction of travel, plan for fuel stops and allow extra time for photo breaks along the Coral Coast — it’s a drive worth slowing down for!

10:30 AM | Arrive at Nature’s Window Carpark
Start your day at the Nature’s Window carpark, located within the inland gorge section of the park.
Facilities are basic but well maintained, and arriving mid-morning gives you pleasant light for photography while avoiding the peak midday heat. Before setting off, take a moment to check signage for trail conditions and safety advice—this is rugged terrain, and sturdy footwear is essential.
10:30 AM – 12:00 PM | Walk to Nature’s Window
The walk to Nature’s Window is one of Kalbarri’s most iconic experiences. The 1 km Grade-3 return trail takes around 30-45 minutes to complete and winds through vibrant red sandstone, dotted with native flora and framed by sweeping gorge views. The final reveal is unforgettable: a natural rock arch perfectly framing the winding Murchison River below! It’s a bucket-list photo spot for good reason, but it’s worth lingering beyond the shutter clicks — watch the shadows move across the gorge and appreciate the sheer age of this landscape, shaped over hundreds of millions of years. Allow plenty of time here as there is usally a long queue for photos!!

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM | Lunch at Kalbarri Skywalk
From Nature’s Window, it’s a short drive to the Kalbarri Skywalk precinct.
This is an ideal lunch stop, with picnic tables available if you’ve packed food, or the option to purchase light meals and drinks from the on-site café. Even before stepping onto the walkways, the views from the carpark area are impressive— sheer cliffs plunge into the gorge, hinting at what’s to come!

1:00 PM – 2:00 PM | Kalbarri Skywalk Experience
The Kalbarri Skywalk features two dramatic cantilevered platforms extending 100 metres above the gorge floor. Designed to blend into the landscape, the walkways offer uninterrupted views down into the river valley and across the rugged sandstone terrain.

Interpretive signage provides insight into the region’s geology, ecology and cultural significance, adding depth to the experience. Take your time here — walk each platform, sit quietly on the benches, and watch birds riding the thermals below. Despite the heights, the Skywalk feels secure and accessible, making it suitable for all ages.
2:00 PM – 2:30 PM | Drive to Z Bend Lookout
The drive to Z Bend Lookout is scenic in itself, following the gorge rim through classic outback landscapes. Keep an eye out for kangaroos and emus, especially in the warmer afternoon hours.
2:30 PM – 4:30 PM | Z Bend Lookout Walk & Gorge Views
The 1.2km Grade-3 return walk to Z Bend Lookout takes around 45min to an hour and delivers some of the most dramatic river views in the park. The lookout peers straight down into a sharp bend in the gorge, where the Murchison River snakes between towering rock walls.

For those with the energy and experience, an extension of this walk descends further toward the gorge (2.6km return, Grade 4, allow 2 hours), revealing changing perspectives and cooler air as you move closer to the river. Even if you stick to the main lookout, the scale and silence of the landscape are powerful — this is a place that invites reflection as much as photography. Late afternoon light adds warmth to the rock colours, making this an especially rewarding final stop.
4:30 PM Onwards | Return or Continue Your Journey
As the day winds down, make your way back to Kalbarri town, Geraldton or your next Coral Coast destination. Sunset along the coast or a relaxed dinner in Kalbarri makes a fitting end to a day spent immersed in nature.
