Getting there
The trailhead is accessible from Katoomba, about a two-hour drive from Sydney. From Katoomba town centre, take Cliff Drive to Glenraphael Drive. Drive along Glenraphael Drive for about 2.5 kilometres until you reach a locked gate where the walk officially begins. Please note that 4WD vehicles are recommended along the unsealed Glenraphael Drive, especially after wet weather.
For those seeking an extra challenge, park at the intersection of Cliff Drive and Glenraphael Drive and start your walk from there. This adds another 5 kilometres and includes a steep climb, increasing both the physical intensity and the elevation gain of your adventure.
The Trail Overview
The Narrow Neck Trail is a fire trail that runs approximately 10 kilometres one way, from the locked gate or 12.5 kilometres one way, from the Cliff Dr & Glenraphael Dr intersection. While the fire trail is wide and well-maintained, the numerous steep sections, combined with its length, make this hike challenging and require good stamina and preparation. Provided below are some key stats about the walk as well as the AllTrail maps.

Essential Preparation
Given the trail’s length and limited facilities, thorough preparation is key:
- Pack a Lunch: The trail is long, so bringing a meal is essential.
- Hydration: Carry ample water, as the hike can be physically demanding.
- Wear Sturdy Shoes: The terrain can be uneven, so reliable hiking boots are a must.
- Dress in Layers: Blue Mountains weather is unpredictable. Bring a light, waterproof jacket for rain or wind.
- Sun Protection: Pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to guard against the strong sun.
Note: The Narrow Neck Trail is home to many cicadas during the warmer months, their loud, rhythmic chirping creating an almost constant backdrop. While some may find the sound nostalgic or immersive, others might find it overwhelming. Additionally, many dead cicadas can be spotted along the trail, which might be unsettling for children or those unaccustomed to seeing insects in such abundance. To make the walk more enjoyable, especially for families, it's good to prepare kids in advance for these natural sights.
To add to the insect encounters, the trail is often teeming with flies, particularly in summer. These can be quite bothersome, so packing a fly hat or net is highly recommended to ensure a more comfortable hike.
The Experience Along the Trail
The Narrow Neck Trail offers hikers a rewarding journey through the dramatic landscapes of the Blue Mountains. While the fire trail begins with a relatively even gradient near the locked gate, the path quickly introduces steep ascents and descents, challenging even seasoned hikers. These steep sections test your endurance but are interspersed with flatter stretches that provide brief respite. The climb is worth the effort, as the higher elevations reveal awe-inspiring views of the valleys on either side.
As you progress along the trail, the scenery shifts between dense eucalyptus forests and exposed ridgelines. The ridgeline itself feels like a natural balcony, with dramatic drops into the Jamison Valley on one side and the Megalong Valley on the other. The sense of isolation deepens as you move further along the peninsula, with the sweeping vistas and the occasional call of a lyrebird as your only companions.
Approximately 7 kilometres from the trailhead, you’ll find the Narrow Neck Trail Toilet Block, which provides a basic pit toilet. However, during our visit, this facility was closed. For longer walks like this, it’s always wise to carry a shovel for emergencies and adhere to Leave No Trace principles when using the bush as a bathroom!
While the trail primarily follows a fire trail, take time to stop at the vehicle turnaround points along the way. These spots provide stunning lookouts with views over the valleys and cliffs that surround the trail. Without these scenic breaks, the trail can feel monotonous, but these moments of awe make it a truly memorable journey. The lookouts not only offer a chance to rest but also provide spectacular perspectives of the dramatic sandstone cliffs and the vast wilderness stretching into the horizon.
The final stretch of the walk becomes steeper and narrower, heightening the sense of adventure. This section rewards you with unparalleled views from the southern tip of Narrow Neck Peninsula. Standing here, you can see Lake Burragorang to the south, the Wild Dog Mountains to the west, and the sprawling Jamison Valley to the east. The trail’s end is a fitting climax to an invigorating journey, offering a moment of serenity and reflection amidst the natural grandeur of the Blue Mountains.
After completing the Narrow Neck Trail, a visit to Narrow Neck Lookout is the perfect way to cap off your adventure. Located just a short drive back along Cliff Drive on the way to Katoomba, this easily accessible lookout offers a stunning vantage point to reflect on the rugged beauty you’ve just explored. From here, you’ll get sweeping views of the Jamison Valley and the impressive sandstone cliffs that define the Blue Mountains landscape. It’s an ideal spot to rest, take some final photos, and soak in the scenery without the effort of a hike.
The Narrow Neck Trail is a journey of challenges and rewards, perfect for those seeking an immersive Blue Mountains experience. With its combination of physical exertion, natural beauty, and unparalleled vistas, this trail promises an adventure to remember. Be prepared, take your time, and let the beauty of the Blue Mountains captivate you!
