Getting there
Nestled in the lush hinterlands of New South Wales, Bellingen is the charming gateway to the Waterfall Way Scenic Drive, making it an ideal starting point for this enchanting journey. Begin your adventure at the Waterfall Way Visitor Centre in Bellingen, where friendly locals provide invaluable insights, detailed maps, and recommendations to ensure you experience all the scenic wonders along the route. Stroll through Bellingen’s historic streets, lined with boutique shops, cozy cafes, and vibrant galleries, before setting off to explore the breathtaking landscapes that await.
Pro Tip: While not officially part of the Waterfall Way Drive, a visit to Coffs Harbour is well worth a detour, while in this region. Just an hour's drive from Bellingen, Coffs Harbour offers stunning beaches, the iconic Big Banana, and a bustling marina. Enjoy fresh seafood, explore the unique attractions, and take in the serene coastal views, adding a delightful coastal twist to your inland adventure. Check out our blog post below for a detailed itinerary for Coffs Harbour.
Day 1: Stop #1 - Newell Falls
Our first stop for the day was Newell Falls, located 20 km from Bellingen. This picturesque waterfall offers a tantalising preview of the natural beauty that awaits along the Waterfall Way. As you approach, park your car at the Newell Falls Rest Area for a quick and convenient look at the falls. From here, you can enjoy the serene view of the cascading waters nestled amidst lush greenery. Please note that the waterfall can only be viewed from the rest area, as it is not accessible up close and crossing the road is prohibited. Despite the distance, the sight of Newell Falls' graceful descent provides a perfect introduction to the breathtaking landscapes and majestic waterfalls that define the Waterfall Way.
Day 1: Stop #2 - Dorrigo Rainforest Centre and Dorrigo Skywalk
Our next stop was the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, with a quick glimpse of Sherrard Falls along the way. Keep an eye out for the falls on the left-hand side while driving towards Dorrigo from Newell Falls, as Sherrard Falls is viewable only for a very short time from the car. Since there are no safe places to stop your car for a closer view, Sherrard Falls can only be appreciated while driving. Nevertheless, it is a spectacular sight!
While free parking is available onsite in the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, finding parking spots later in the day can be challenging. We recommend visiting as early as possible to secure a spot. As the day progresses, we noticed visitors resorting to parking their cars along the sides of Dome Road.
The Dorrigo Rainforest Centre serves as a gateway to the ancient wonders of the Dorrigo National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity of the rainforest through interactive exhibits, informative displays, and educational programs. The centre offers a range of amenities, including a cafe, gift shop, and picnic area, making it a perfect starting point for exploration.
After spending time at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, don't miss the opportunity to embark on the elevated Dorrigo Skywalk located at the back of the Rainforest Centre. This iconic attraction offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the lush canopy stretching out to the distant horizons. Suspended high above the forest floor, the Skywalk provides a unique vantage point to admire the pristine beauty of the ancient rainforest and appreciate the vastness of the surrounding landscape. It's a truly mesmerising experience that offers a new perspective on the wonders of nature.
Day 1: Stop #3 - Tristania and Crystal Shower Falls via Wonga Walk
Next, we embarked on the scenic Wonga Walk, a captivating trail commencing at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre that leads visitors to two of Dorrigo National Park's most enchanting waterfalls: Tristania and Crystal Shower Falls. As we ventured deeper into the ancient rainforest, the air was filled with the soothing sounds of birdcalls and the gentle rush of cascading water. Along the way, lush ferns and towering trees provided a picturesque backdrop, immersing us in the tranquility of nature. However, it's worth noting that the walking trail is infested with leeches, so enclosed shoes and fully covered clothing are recommended for a comfortable hike.
Provided below are the AllTrails Map for the walk and some essential information about the trail.

Our first stop was Tristania Falls, where the water gracefully tumbled down the moss-covered rocks into the valley below. The serene ambiance of the rainforest enveloped us as we stood mesmerized by the natural beauty surrounding us.
After taking in the splendor of Tristania Falls, we continued our journey along the Wonga Walk, with a quick stop at Hardwood Lookout, a picturesque vantage point along the Wonga Walk offering sweeping views of the surrounding rainforest landscape.
As we approached Crystal Shower Falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder, heralding our arrival at this magnificent natural wonder. From the footbridge opposite the falls, we were treated to a breathtaking view of the front of the falls, where the water cascaded in shimmering curtains, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
However, we didn't stop there. Venturing around to the back of the falls, we were rewarded with an even more spectacular sight. Standing behind the curtain of water, we felt a sense of awe and wonder as we witnessed the sheer power and beauty of Crystal Shower Falls up close. It was a truly unforgettable experience that highlighted the magic of Dorrigo National Park's pristine rainforest environment.
On the day of our visit, the section from Crystal Shower Falls to the Glade Picnic Area was closed for maintenance, so we had to return to the Rainforest Centre via the same path as our onward walk. However, if this section of the walk is open during your visit, you can continue onto the Glade Picnic Area and then the Rainforest Centre via Walk with the Birds, making this a loop walk that offers diverse scenery and a chance to encounter the park's birdlife along the way. We were hungry after all that walking, so we took advantage of one of the picnic tables at the Rainforest Centre and enjoyed a well-deserved picnic lunch amidst the tranquil surroundings of the ancient rainforest.
Day 1: Last Stop - Dangar Falls
As the day draws to a close, make your way to Dangar Falls, a picturesque waterfall that promises to captivate with its stunning display of nature's power.
Begin your visit at the upper viewing platform, which offers sweeping panoramic views of the entire waterfall and the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, you can appreciate the full majesty of the cascading waters as they plunge into the pool below, framed by lush greenery and rugged cliffs.
Next, head down to the lower viewing platform (1km out & back on a steep boardwalk with some steps), where you can get a closer look at the roaring waters. This platform allows you to experience the falls' beauty and power up close, immersing you in the raw energy of the rushing water and the serene atmosphere of the surrounding forest. It's an ideal spot for photography enthusiasts and those seeking a more intimate connection with nature.
For the more adventurous, the path from the lower platform leads down to the base of the waterfall, where you can access the pool for a refreshing dip. The cool, clear waters provide a perfect way to unwind and cool off after a day of exploration. Swimming in the natural pool at the foot of Dangar Falls is a unique and invigorating experience, offering a memorable way to end your visit to this stunning natural wonder.
Note: Accommodation along Waterfall Way in Ebor or Dorrigo can be limited, especially if not booked well in advance. In such cases, there are a couple of options to consider for your overnight stay. One option is to backtrack to Bellingen or Urunga for the night, where there may be more accommodation choices available. Alternatively, you may choose to head to Armidale for the night, where there are more choices for comfortable accommodations. Whichever option you choose, you can easily return to Ebor on Day 2 and continue your exploration of Waterfall Way from there.
Day 2: Stop #1 - Ebor Falls
Ebor Falls is the first stop for Day 2, and it promises to start your day with a sense of awe and wonder. Wake up to the grandeur of Ebor Falls, where the water cascades dramatically over rugged cliffs into the Guy Fawkes River below. This majestic sight is truly a feast for the eyes, offering a powerful display of nature's raw beauty.
Embark on a short but rewarding walk along the well-maintained paths that lead to several viewing platforms. Each vantage point provides a unique perspective of the falls, allowing you to appreciate the intricate details and varying angles of this natural masterpiece. The upper falls viewing platform gives a sweeping panorama of the falls’ impressive drop and the surrounding landscape, where you can feel the mist on your face and hear the roar of the water as it crashes into the pool below.
During our visit, the lower viewing platform was closed for maintenance, but even from the upper and middle viewpoints, the sight of Ebor Falls was breathtaking. As you explore the different viewpoints, take a moment to absorb the serene environment, listen to the sounds of the rushing water, and marvel at the lush greenery that frames the falls. Whether you are an avid photographer looking to capture the perfect shot or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world, Ebor Falls is a destination that will leave a lasting impression.
Day 2: Stop #2 - Cathedral Rock Lookout
The next few hours are not for the faint-hearted, as you embark on a thrilling adventure to one of nature's marvels in Cathedral Rock National Park. Prepare yourself for a Grade 5 hike to the spectacular Cathedral Rock Lookout, a journey that demands rock-hopping, clambering over boulders, and straddling crevices. This challenging yet rewarding hike takes you through rugged terrain, testing your agility and endurance as you navigate the rocky landscape. The effort is well worth it, as the lookout offers breathtaking panoramic views that are truly awe-inspiring. For more details about this exhilarating walk, check out our post below.
Day 2: Stop #3 - Point Lookout
Our next stop for the day was Point Lookout in New England National Park, a location renowned for its sweeping vistas and breathtaking scenery. It's important to note that 14km on Point Lookout Road is an unsealed road; while 2WD vehicles can navigate this road, especially during dry weather, it's advisable to have a 4WD, particularly in wet conditions, for a smoother and safer journey.
On the day of our visit, the view from Point Lookout was completely shrouded in fog, obscuring the expansive panoramas for which this spot is famous. Despite this, the drive to the lookout was enchanting, with mist weaving through the ancient trees and creating an ethereal atmosphere. The short walk around the lookout was equally magical, as the fog lent a mystical quality to the landscape. Towering eucalypts emerged ghost-like from the mist, and the sounds of the forest were amplified in the dense, moist air. Even without the usual views, the experience at Point Lookout was unforgettable, showcasing the park's beauty in a uniquely serene and otherworldly way.

Day 2: Stop #4 - Beech Lookout
A short drive away in Cunnawarra National Park, Beech Lookout offers another breathtaking vantage point. This scenic spot provides panoramic views over the lush, ancient forests of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.
From the lookout, you can gaze upon a stunning expanse of dense greenery stretching to the horizon, interspersed with dramatic escarpments and deep valleys. Named after the Antarctic Beech trees that dominate the area, the lookout exudes a prehistoric charm. Whether the day is clear or shrouded in mist, Beech Lookout presents a tranquil and awe-inspiring glimpse into one of the world's oldest and most diverse forest ecosystems, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Day 2: Stop #5 - Wollomombi & Chandler Falls
Our next stop brings us to the Wollomombi Falls Picnic Area, nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.
Note: For an added adventure, if you have a 4WD, we recommend you to take the Styx River Forest Way and then the Kempsey Road from Beech Lookout to Wollomombi Falls Picnic Area. These roads are 4WD only and dry weather only roads and take approximately 30 minutes longer than driving along Point Lookout Road. However, the journey along these unsealed roads is quite memorable, offering a rugged and immersive experience amidst the wilderness of the region. From winding tracks through dense forests to panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscapes, this alternate route promises a unique and exhilarating drive for those seeking a bit of off-road excitement.
Here, nature's grandeur takes center stage with the awe-inspiring Wollomombi Falls and Chandler Falls. Just a short walk from the car park, the Main Falls Lookout and Checks Lookout offer spectacular views of the plunging waterfalls and the rugged gorge below. While the water flow may have been less during our visit, the view of the deep valley from Wollomombi Falls was nothing short of spectacular. Unlike the spring-fed waterfalls we visited earlier, Wollomombi Falls is a rain-fed waterfall, relying on rainfall to maintain its flow. Despite the reduced water volume, the rugged beauty of the surrounding landscape and the sheer drop of the falls into the gorge below created a scene of breathtaking grandeur. Standing at the lookout, gazing out over the expansive valley carved by the rushing waters, it was easy to appreciate the raw power and timeless majesty of nature at work.
If time permits, we highly recommend taking the Chandler Walk and Wollomombi Walk for an added dose of excitement and adventure. These walking tracks wind through the pristine wilderness, offering opportunities to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area while discovering hidden gems along the way.
Day 2: Last Stop - Edgars Lookout
Our final stop for the day brings us to Edgars Lookout, a serene vantage point near Wollomombi Falls Campground, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
Perched high atop a rugged escarpment in Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, Edgars Lookout provides a captivating vista of the sweeping valleys and ancient forests below. As the golden hues of dusk paint the sky, the scenery takes on a magical quality, with the distant hills bathed in soft, ethereal light. It's a fitting end to a day of exploration and adventure, providing a moment of tranquility and reflection as we bid farewell to the natural wonders of the region.

Note: This marks the completion of our exploration of the captivating waterfalls that adorn Waterfall Way. As we continue our journey along this scenic route, we head towards Armidale for a restful night's stay. However, our adventure doesn't conclude just yet! Day 3 promises further enchantment as we venture beyond Waterfall Way to discover a few more spectacular waterfalls around Armidale. These lesser-known gems may be off the beaten path, but they are nevertheless Armidale's hidden treasures, waiting to be uncovered and admired for their natural beauty and splendor.
Day 3: Stop #1 - Dangars Falls
As the sun rises on Day 3, our first stop is Dangars Falls, a majestic cascade nestled within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. Please note that Dangars Falls is NOT to be confused with Dangar Falls in Dorrigo that we visited on Day 1. It's also important to note that the last 10km on Dangars Falls Road is on an unsealed road; while 2WD vehicles can navigate this road, especially during dry weather, it's advisable to have a 4WD, particularly in wet conditions, for a smoother and safer journey.
Despite the reduced water flow during our visit, the sheer drop of the falls into the gorge below still commanded admiration. As a rain-fed waterfall, Dangars Falls serves as a reminder of nature's ever-changing beauty, its flow dependent on the whims of rainfall. Despite the reduced water flow, the rugged scenery surrounding the falls created a scene of timeless grandeur.
Be sure to take the easy 300m (one-way) Falls Walk to venture near the edge of the waterfall, where the view is truly jaw-dropping. Standing at the precipice, gazing out over the water as it plunges into the depths below, is an experience that will leave you spellbound!
Day 3: Stop #2 - Apsley Falls
Next on our itinerary is Apsley Falls, another striking natural wonder within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park.
Unlike some waterfalls along Waterfall Way, you can easily drive up to the lookout and admire the falls without much walking involved. Like Dangars Falls, Apsley Falls also relies on rainfall for its flow, resulting in diminished water levels during our visit. Nevertheless, the breathtaking plunge into the gorge below remains a sight to behold. As we stand at the lookout, gazing out over the rugged landscape, we're reminded of the power and resilience of nature, even in times of drought.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit the nearby Lower Pool Lookout, Landslide Lookout, and Lions Lookout, all within a walkable distance from Apsley Falls Lookout. Each of these viewpoints offers its own unique perspective of the surrounding landscape, allowing you to immerse yourself further in the natural beauty of the area.
Lastly, if you have more time to spare, you can embark on a 2.8km return walk to Oxley Lookout and Lower Falls Lookout, or take a short stroll to the Apsley River suspension bridge (400m return), each offering unique perspectives of the surrounding scenery and adding to the adventure of your visit.
Day 3: Last Stop - Tia Falls
Our final stop for the day is Tia Falls Picnic Area within Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. It's important to note that the 5km Tia Falls Road is an unsealed road; while 2WD vehicles can navigate this road, especially during dry weather, it's advisable to have a 4WD, particularly in wet conditions, for a smoother and safer journey.
Accessible via a moderately challenging 1.6km out-and-back walk, the journey to Tia Falls promises both adventure and awe-inspiring views. Despite the trail's rugged terrain, the effort is well-rewarded as you emerge at the lookout point. There, before you, the spectacle unfolds: Tia Falls cascades gracefully into the gorge below, its waters carving through the landscape with timeless force. The roar of the waterfall reverberates through the valley, harmonizing with the serenity of the lush surroundings. While the hike may present its challenges, the captivating vistas and the raw beauty of Tia Falls make every step worthwhile, ensuring an unforgettable experience amidst nature's grandeur.
Don't miss the short 130m walk from Tia Falls Lookout to take in the spectacular views of Tia Gorge. The Tia Gorge view offers an awe-inspiring panorama of rugged cliffs and lush greenery. It's a perfect spot for photography and soaking in the natural beauty!
And with that, our adventure along Waterfall Way draws to a close. From here, you have the choice to either journey back to your starting point or return to Armidale to uncover even more of its hidden gems. In Armidale (the highest city in New South Wales, situated at an elevation of around 1000 metres above sea level!), you can explore captivating attractions such as the historic Saumarez Homestead, the picturesque Gara Gorge, or indulge in a leisurely stroll through the charming city center, dotted with quaint cafes and boutique shops. Whether you choose to extend your journey or bid farewell to this enchanting region, the memories of Waterfall Way's cascading wonders and scenic beauty will undoubtedly linger, beckoning you to return and explore further.
