This popular hiking trail is located in Palm Beach, and offers spectacular panoramic views of the ocean, beaches, and surrounding bushland. As you make your way up to the lighthouse, you'll discover stunning rock formations, wildlife, and historical landmarks that make this hike both scenic and informative. At the top of the lighthouse, you'll be rewarded with stunning 360-degree views of the coastline, where you can spot whales, dolphins, and other marine life. So put on your walking shoes, pack a picnic, and get ready for an unforgettable experience on the Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk.
Getting there
Head to Governor Phillip Park and park your car in one of the many available parking spots. Do note that it’s a paid parking and the place gets very busy on weekends and public holidays!
Provided below is a map of the Barrenjoey Lighthouse Walk as well as some key facts about the walk.

From the carpark (pin in the map above), head north towards the lighthouse for approximately 40 metres until you see the signpost provided below.
The beach that you see on your left is called Station Beach (North) and is the perfect spot if you’re looking for a quiet, sandy beach with calm waters and stunning views over Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Spend some time at the beach appreciating the spectacular views it offers.
Walk further north along the Station Beach until you reach the following intersection.
We recommend you to take the 800m Grade 2 Access Trail to reach the lighthouse and take the 400m Grade 3 Smugglers Track on your way back down. Smugglers Track has many steep steps that will make the climb up very difficult!
After 240 metres from taking the Access Trail, the road turns sharply to the right and from here, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the bay!
As you continue further, you will have several opportunities to stop for photos and enjoy the views until you reach the lighthouse.
The views only get better upon reaching the lighthouse! Be sure to bring your binoculars for whale watching between the months of May and September or simply settle for capturing the panoramic views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and the Central Coast with your camera. The Lion Island with its distinctive spinifex shape is home to the largest population of little penguins in the Sydney area!
The inside of the lighthouse is only accessible by a guided tour every Sunday, which can be booked via NSW National Parks' website. Once you’re content with the spectacular views, head to the northern end of the lighthouse where you will see a path leading further east.
Continue on this path for approximately 260 metres or so until you reach the end of the headland and you will be treated by even more spectacular views of the ocean!
Now, head back to the lighthouse and you will see the Smugglers track commencing at the southern side of the lighthouse. Drinking water and toilets are located here.
Continue on the Smugglers Track via the steep rugged steps until you eventually reach the Station Beach. While you need to be certainly cautious about the steep steps, don’t forget to enjoy the views throughout!
Before you head back to your car, make sure to visit the gorgeous Palm Beach as well. Upon reaching Station Beach, when you start walking south towards the carpark, take the first left (as shown in the trail map above) and continue straight until you reach Palm Beach. Spend some time taking in the views and relaxing at the beach before heading to the carpark.
