Last Stop: Central Valley Walk
End your day with a leisurely stroll along the Central Valley Walk. Stretching approximately 2.7km, this scenic route offers a relatively easy journey along paved pathways. While the walk boasts picturesque views, be aware that it includes areas with significant elevation changes. Remember to wear enclosed shoes, don a hat, and carry water to stay comfortable and hydrated during your exploration. Provided below is the map of the walk as well as some key facts.
Start your walk by crossing the road from the Visitor Centre and venturing into the beautifully landscaped Connections Garden. As you follow the path to the right, marvel at the majestic Wollemi Pine, a rare and threatened plant which is a living relic from a lineage that traces back to the time of the dinosaurs, adding an extraordinary touch of ancient history to the garden. Continuing along the path, you'll encounter the towering Bunya Pine on your left. Known for producing the largest cone of any Australian conifer and weighing up to 10 kg, this species held great significance for First Nations people, who valued its nutritious kernels, often ground or roasted. Take a moment to appreciate the rich botanical heritage and cultural significance embodied by these remarkable trees.
Navigate around the side of the Connections Garden, zigzagging your way to the top of the hill. Embrace the challenge of the steep ascent, as the rewarding view awaits at the summit. Upon reaching the top, pause on the flat ground to the left of the water tank and absorb the breathtaking panorama that unfolds before you.
Continue along the present pathway, descending to the bottom of the hill. Stay on the path to the right until you arrive at the Fig Arboretum. Here, you'll encounter a diverse collection of 42 species of Australian figs, each thriving in various habitats ranging from desert to coastal regions. Take a moment to appreciate the unique characteristics of these figs, such as the rough leaves of the Sandpaper Figs, which contain silica and were ingeniously utilized by First Nations people as sandpaper.
Next, discover the romantic allure of the Wedding Knot! The Knot, a solid and enduring dry stone wall within the garden, stands as a powerful symbol of love, friendship, respect, and loyalty. Composed of countless stones interlocked in unity, it embodies the strength found in shared memories and emotions.
As you continue your walk, veer slightly to the right for a brief detour, and you'll soon find yourself at Mount Annan Summit. The hike to the summit is relatively easy-going, so why not give it a try? The panoramic views from the top are sure to be worth it.
Pressing forward along your path, you'll pass by several majestic Bunya Pines before ascending Sundial Hill. Here, you'll encounter an intriguing analemmatic sundial, allowing you to tell the time by following the directions provided on the plaque. On your right, you'll come across Lake Sedgwick, named in honor of Edward Sedgwick and his descendants, who resided here until 1978.
