Itineraries Home » Tasmania » Conquering the Edge at South East Cape, Australia's Southernmost Point
Embarking on the expedition to the southernmost point of Australia promises an immersive odyssey through Tasmania's isolated southern coastline. Nestled within the rugged beauty of the Southwest National Park and the expansive Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, South East Cape, the southernmost point of Australia stands as a testament to the raw, unbridled nature that defines this remote corner of the world.
It is to be noted that South East Cape itself lacks a formed walking trail and hence, South Cape Bay emerges as the closest accessible point for intrepid explorers. As evident from our previous posts, we have always been curious in exploring the extremes of Australia so, when we began planning our Tasmania Trip, it was only fitting that the first item on our checklist was a hike to the southernmost point of the continent. The allure of reaching the literal edge of Australia drew us to this untamed corner, sparking the anticipation of discovering the raw beauty and pristine wilderness that encapsulates the southern landscapes of this island state.
For those eager to delve into our experiences at the other extreme points of Australia, here are our other posts, offering a comprehensive exploration that chronicles our endeavor to embrace the diverse and far-reaching corners of this vast and captivating land.
Getting there
The trail to South East Cape is part of the larger South Coast Track, a challenging and rewarding expedition that stretches for 6-8 days one way. The hike to the southernmost point commences near the Cockle Creek and Boltons Green Campgrounds, around 120km south of Hobart which takes approximately 2 hours to drive.
Please note that the last 25 kilometers of the drive is on an unsealed road so be prepared for some adventurous ride especially during or shortly after wet weather. We do recommend to take a 4WD, if you can. This portion of the journey definitely adds an extra layer of excitement, setting the tone for the rugged wilderness that awaits.
The campgrounds are situated at the southern extreme point reachable by road in Australia and serves as a gateway to an untouched realm. From here, the walking track to the southernmost point takes adventurers through dense forests, alongside creeks, and over challenging terrains, heightening the sense of exploration and anticipation. The trailhead has a couple of drop toilets to use, before commencing the walk.
Provided below is an AllTrails map for the walk along with some key facts.

Embarking on the trek to South East Cape unfolds as a journey of distinct phases, each offering a unique encounter with Tasmania's untamed beauty. The intial leg of the walk encompasses a bush walk, where adventurers traverse through dense forests, guided by the rustling leaves and calls of native birds. This immersive bush walk marks the commencement of the trek from the Cockle Creek Campground, setting the tone for the exploration of Tasmania's pristine wilderness. The trail meanders through the lush greenery, creating an intimate connection with the natural surroundings, as participants embrace the solitude of the bush.
Continuing along the path towards South East Cape, the second third of the journey transitions to duck boarding. Wooden boards elevate the trail, guiding hikers through wetlands and marshy terrain. This section introduces a unique perspective, allowing adventurers to navigate through landscapes that might otherwise be challenging to traverse. The duck boarding experience adds a layer of adventure, providing a glimpse into the diverse ecosystems that characterize the journey to the southernmost point of Australia.
The final third of the walk unfolds as a coastal exploration, where the trail leads through rocks and bush along the rugged coastline. This segment offers a dramatic shift in scenery, with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks and the rugged terrain serving as a testament to the raw beauty of the Southern Ocean.
As you finish the walk, you'll reach the southernmost point of Australia, the South Cape Bay cliffs. It's a special place where you can see the vast Southern Ocean stretching out before you. The waves crash against the cliffs, creating a powerful and rhythmic sound. While you enjoy taking photographs near the cliff, be careful not to go to the cliff edge, as it can collapse without warning! This spot shows you the wild and untouched beauty of South Cape Bay, where the land meets the sea.
While direct access to South East Cape may not be possible, you can certainly enjoy a fantastic view of it from this vantage point - just look to your left in the photo below. Standing here, you can feel the incredible force of nature and appreciate the stunning view that makes reaching the southernmost point a truly memorable experience!
After capturing plenty of pictures to reminisce about your memorable experience, proceed another 150 meters along the trail until you encounter a steep flight of around 40 stairs leading down to the beach. Upon reaching the sandy shores, take a moment to relax or savor a picnic lunch. And, of course, seize the opportunity to capture plenty of photos of this picturesque location as well.
If time permits, consider strolling along the beach towards Lion Rock, where the South Cape Bay campsite awaits. This camping spot even features a drop toilet for your convenience. When it comes time to head back, retrace your steps to the trailhead. Despite following the same route, rest assured that your return journey will still offer a unique and delightful experience!
