Getting there
Reaching the Snowy Mountains is an adventure in itself, with several options to suit every traveller. Whether you’re driving, taking public transport, or flying, getting to this alpine paradise is a breeze. By car, the scenic roads lead you through rolling hills and charming countryside, culminating in a breathtaking approach to the mountains. If you prefer public transport, coaches and trains connect major cities to the region, with convenient stops in Cooma and Jindabyne. For those opting to fly, the nearest airport is in Cooma, with regular flights from Sydney and Melbourne, followed by a short drive to your destination.
Arriving in Jindabyne the evening before ensures a restful night, setting the stage for your adventure-filled weekend. With its cost-effective accommodations and stunning lakeside views, Jindabyne is a perfect base. Alternatively, consider staying in the historic town of Cooma for a similarly budget-friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Both towns offer easy access to the Snowy Mountains, making them ideal starting points for your alpine escape.
Day 1: Conquering Mt. Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak!
The first light of daybreak brings with it the promise of conquering Mt. Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak. Our day begins with a visit to the Snowy Region Visitor Centre, where we gather maps, information, and last-minute tips to ensure a successful hike. Here, we also gain valuable knowledge about all the exciting activities planned for our long weekend, setting the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
The excitement is palpable as we lace up our hiking boots and set off on this legendary trail to Mt. Kosciuszko. The journey takes us through breathtaking alpine meadows, and the crisp mountain air invigorates our spirits. As we ascend, the panoramic views become more stunning, offering glimpses of jagged peaks, serene valleys, and the expansive horizon stretching as far as the eye can see. Each step brings us closer to the summit, and the sense of anticipation builds with every turn of the trail. As the day transitions into evening, make sure to explore Thredbo Village before heading back to your hotel. The vibrant village atmosphere, filled with cosy cafes and boutique shops, provides the perfect backdrop for recounting the day’s adventures. Whether it’s indulging in a gourmet meal or simply soaking up the alpine charm, Thredbo Village adds a touch of magic to your evening.
Day 2: Discovering the Mysteries of Yarrangobilly Caves!
Day two promises a journey into the subterranean wonders of Yarrangobilly Caves. Nestled within the rugged landscapes of the Snowy Mountains, these ancient limestone caves offer a fascinating glimpse into the geological history of the region. With their intricate formations and captivating underground beauty, Yarrangobilly Caves are a must-visit for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike! To reach Yarrangobilly Caves from Jindabyne, head north on the Kosciuszko Road and merge onto the Snowy Mountains Highway. Continue driving for approximately two hours, enjoying the scenic views along the way, until you reach the turnoff for the Yarrangobilly Caves entrance. The drive is straightforward and well-signposted, ensuring an easy and enjoyable journey to this hidden gem of the Snowy Mountains.
Note: Park entry fee of $4 per vehicle per day applies at Yarrangobilly Caves for motor vehicles without a Kosciuszko National Park day pass or NPWS All Parks annual pass. You can pay the fee at the Yarrangobilly Caves Visitor Centre. If you're planning to visit only the caves on this day, don't bother to buy the Kosciuszko National Park multi-day pass instead just buy the parking pass from the Caves Visitor Centre; this helps you save some money on the pass.
The day at Yarrangobilly Caves began at the Visitor Centre, where we collected our parking pass and cave tour passes. It's essential to book your cave tours ahead of time to secure your spot and avoid any disappointments. Bookings can be conveniently made online at NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service's website. Upon arrival, we checked in at the Visitor Centre before embarking on our underground adventures.
Our first stop was the mesmerising Jersey Cave, where a guided tour awaited us. Jersey Cave is a must-see and should not be missed, even if you have to skip the other caves! The Jersey Cave Tour offers a captivating 1.5-hour guided exploration, graded as medium difficulty, making it suitable for adults and children aged 5 years and over, although moderate fitness is required. The tour follows a 185m path, encompassing 217 steps, including some steep stairs, providing an immersive and exhilarating experience into the depths of this natural wonder. This subterranean wonderland dazzled us with its spectacular cave corals and intricate calcite formations, from delicate straws and stalactites to grand columns and flowstones. The guide provided fascinating insights into the cave's history and geology, enriching our experience with stories of its formation over millions of years. The vivid colours and captivating formations of the Jersey Cave set a high standard for the day ahead.

Following our enlightening tour of Jersey Cave, we ventured onwards to explore the compact yet stunning Jillabenan Cave. This tour is a guided exploration lasting an hour and is graded as easy and is suitable for all ages, mobility, and fitness levels. The tour begins with a leisurely stroll along a 150m path leading to the cave entrance, followed by a captivating journey through the cave's 73m-long passages, offering a delightful and accessible experience for visitors of all backgrounds. Led by a knowledgeable guide, we delved into the depths of this cave, marvelling at its sparkling shawls and gravity-defying helictites. The intimate setting allowed for a closer examination of the formations, immersing us in the beauty and wonder of the underground world.

After a well-deserved lunch break, our cave exploration continued with a self-guided tour of the expansive South Glory Cave. This self-guided adventure begins with a scenic 500m gravel track leading from Glory Cave carpark to the majestic Glory Arch, boasting an awe-inspiring opening to the sky. This medium-grade tour, suitable for all ages, requires moderate fitness as visitors traverse a 470m path, encountering 206 steps and several ramps along the way, for an unforgettable 45-minute exploration of this natural marvel. Navigating its vast chambers and passageways at our own pace, we were awestruck by the grandeur of this natural marvel. Towering formations and spacious chambers greeted us at every turn, offering a different perspective on the underground landscape.

While our exploration of Yarrangobilly Caves provided unforgettable experiences, there were several other attractions in the area that we unfortunately had to miss due to fatigue from the previous day's hike to Mt. Kosciuszko. The renowned Yarrangobilly Caves thermal pool and the picturesque Yarrangobilly River walk were on our itinerary, offering opportunities for relaxation and immersion in the natural beauty of the area. The thermal pool, known for its rejuvenating properties, provides a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, while the Yarrangobilly River walk, with its Grade 3 loop spanning 3km and taking approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete, offers a scenic adventure through the tranquil wilderness.
Additionally, Castle, Harrie Wood, and North Glory Caves were closed during our visit, but we encourage visitors to explore them if they are open during your visit, as each promises unique wonders waiting to be discovered. Though we missed these attractions on this occasion, we look forward to experiencing them on future visits to this enchanting region.

As evening falls, return to Jindabyne to unwind. As you make your way from Yarrangobilly Caves to Jindabyne, make a delightful pitstop at The Big Trout in Adaminaby. This iconic landmark is a must-see attraction, offering the perfect opportunity for a quick photo op with the colossal fish sculpture. It's a fun and quirky addition to the journey, adding a touch of charm to the scenic drive through the Snowy Mountains region.
Visiting Lake Jindabyne at Claypits Beach is a must, offering stunning views of the pristine waters surrounded by rolling hills and majestic mountains. The tranquil atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for relaxation after a fantastic day at the caves.
Afterwards, make sure to enjoy the town’s dining options providing a soothing end to a day filled with natural marvels. The town’s laid-back vibe and picturesque setting make it an ideal spot to reflect on our journey thus far.
Day 3: The Kosciuszko Alpine Way Drive - A Journey Through Alpine Splendour and Scenic Wonders!
Embark on the final day of your adventure with a scenic drive along the Kosciuszko Alpine Way from Jindabyne to Khancoban. Please note that if you stop anywhere along the Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Khancoban (which you will, to enjoy the many lookouts along the way!), you must purchase a valid vehicle pass to enter Kosciuszko National Park. Day passes and multiday park entry permits can be conveniently purchased online or at the NPWS vehicle entry stations.
Along the way, make stops at captivating lookouts, including Dead Horse Gap, Pilot Lookout, Leatherbarrel Creek, Geehi Flats, Olsens Lookout, Scammell's Lookout, and Murray 1 Power Station Lookout. Olsens Lookout was closed during our visit, however don't miss the opportunity to visit it if it's open during yours. Follow the Google Maps provided above for navigating to the various stops listed along the route.

Upon reaching Khancoban, don't miss exploring the Khancoban Visitor Centre, where you can delve into the rich history and heritage of the region, learning about its significance as a gateway to the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.
Afterwards, wander through the picturesque Khancoban Rose Garden, only a minute drive from the Visitor Centre and a tranquil oasis bursting with vibrant blooms and fragrant blossoms. If you've packed lunch, take advantage of the picnic tables in the Rose Garden for a delightful al fresco dining experience amidst the beauty of the surroundings. Later, spend some time to wander through the town, soaking in its charm and friendly atmosphere, and perhaps stopping at local cafes or shops along the way.

After a satisfying lunch in Khancoban, begin your journey back to Jindabyne via Kiandra, making quick stops at Tooma Dam, Bradley and OBriens Hut, and various lookout points, including Tumut Pond Dam and the Kiandra Heritage Precinct. By following this loop drive, you'll traverse all the scenic roads of the Snowy Mountains, such as the Kosciuszko Alpine Way, Kosciuszko Rd, and Snowy Mountains Hwy. This concludes our exhilarating summer itinerary in the Snowy Mountains, filled with breathtaking adventures, scenic drives, and unforgettable experiences.

Pro Tip:
For those returning to Canberra or Sydney after visiting Kiandra Heritage Precinct, don't miss the opportunity to take the thrilling 4WD route via Namadgi National Park, with a quick stop at Hospital Hill Lookout. Do note that while 2WD cars can navigate this road with some effort, high clearance vehicles are highly recommended for the best experience.
