Getting there

Narooma is a picturesque coastal town located in the north end of the Sapphire Coast of New South Wales, approximately 350 kilometres south of Sydney and 220 kilometres east of Canberra. If you're driving from Sydney, the scenic route along the Princes Highway takes about 5 hours and offers beautiful coastal views and charming towns along the way. From Canberra, the drive through the rolling countryside takes about three hours. For those preferring public transport, bus services connect Narooma to major cities like Sydney and Canberra. Whatever mode of transport you choose to take, the journey to Narooma is filled with stunning landscapes, making it the perfect start to your coastal getaway.

Day 0: Arrive and Settle In

Arrive in Narooma by afternoon and take some time to settle into your accommodation. Unwind and soak up the town's serene coastal charm with a leisurely stroll through its picturesque streets. As evening falls, indulge in a relaxing dinner at one of Narooma's delightful local restaurants, where you can savour the fresh, locally-sourced seafood that the region is renowned for!​

Day 1: Stop #1 - Mill Bay Boardwalk

Start your adventure at Apex Park Carpark, a prime spot to begin your exploration.

​​Take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque 350-metre Mill Bay Boardwalk, a wooden pathway that runs along the serene Wagonga Inlet. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse marine life in the crystal-clear waters below. We were fortunate to spot stingrays, fish, and even seals during our visit, making it a magical start to the day for nature lovers!

Day 1: Stop #2 - Bar Beach & The Breakwall (North)​

Next, head to Bar Beach by walk (next to Apex carpark as well), where you can choose between Bar Beach South, known for its calm waters ideal for a relaxed swim, or the more rugged Bar Beach North. Continue your walk along The Breakwall, a popular location for fishing and seal and dolphin watching.

​After exploring, enjoy lunch at one of the picnic tables near the carpark, or grab a takeaway meal from a nearby café. The playground next to the picnic shelters is perfect for children, offering fun while you unwind.

Note: For an additional scenic detour, take a short drive to Milmanny Lookout in North Narooma. This spot offers breathtaking panoramic views of the coastline and the Pacific Ocean, making it ideal for capturing stunning sunrises, sunsets, or simply admiring the view any time of day.​​

Day 1: Stop #3 - Bar Rock Lookout, Australia Rock & The Breakwall (South)

Afterwards, continue to Bar Rock Lookout carpark for sweeping ocean and coastline views.

After soaking in the views, head down the flight of stairs next to the lookout to visit Australia Rock, a fascinating rock formation that uncannily resembles the map of Australia!

Venture along the Breakwall for even better views and make sure to stop and observe the large number of seals often seen basking on the rocks, popularly known as Seal Rocks. The breakwalls, marking the transition between the ocean and the tranquil inlet waters, serve as a convenient sunbathing and resting spot for local Australian and New Zealand fur seals!

Day 1: Last Stop - Narooma Beach & Glasshouse Rocks

​Spend your evening at Narooma Beach, a favourite for surfing and sunbathing.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, the iconic Glasshouse Rocks, a striking geological landmark along the Narooma coast that are estimated to be between 440 and 510 million years old, offer a striking backdrop for photos, with their dramatic, weathered formations rising from the sand. Accessible via a 1.6-km easy-grade out-and-back trail from Narooma Cemetery, this site is perfect for capturing the golden hues of sunset. Explore this walk with ease using the AllTrails map provided below, ensuring you stay on track and make the most of your adventure!

​Conclude your day with dinner at one of Narooma's excellent restaurants, enjoying the town's renowned fresh, locally sourced seafood or a hearty meal before retiring for the night!

Day 2: Morning - Barunguba Montague Island Tour

Begin your day with a short drive to Narooma Wharf, where you’ll check in for the much-anticipated Montague Island tour with Narooma Charters.

The full tour is 4.5 hours long and starts precisely at 8AM. This guided experience offers a rich encounter with seals and a visit to the historic lighthouse. With ample opportunities for photography and close encounters with the island’s fauna, this tour is a must for nature enthusiasts. ​For those seeking a thrill, consider diving or snorkelling with seals for an up-close experience with these incredible creatures!

Day 2: Afternoon - Corunna Lake​

Return to Narooma for a leisurely lunch at one of the town's delightful dining spots. Afterward, head to Corunna Lake, a serene destination perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply unwinding by the water.

​Nestled amidst lush greenery, Corunna Lake is a serene escape offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and tranquility. Its calm waters reflect the surrounding hills and trees, creating a picturesque setting that invites relaxation and peaceful contemplation. Whether you're looking to unwind with a good book, take a refreshing dip, or simply enjoy the natural surroundings, Corunna Lake offers a peaceful retreat to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature!

Day 2: Evening - Chasing Beaches

Continue your exploration with visits to the pristine beaches of Mystery Bay, Poole’s Beach, and 1080 Beach, each offering unique charm from secluded coves to expansive sandy stretches. Be aware that much of this road is unsealed, making a 4WD or AWD vehicle highly advisable, particularly following wet weather when the terrain can become challenging to navigate. Additionally, stay vigilant for wildlife, which is abundant in this region. Whether you're driving along the road or exploring the beaches, you'll have the chance to spot a variety of animals, so keep your eyes peeled for these exciting encounters!

​For those seeking adventure, embark on the 5.5-km medium-grade out-and-back walk from Mystery Bay to 1080 Beach, boasting breathtaking coastal views. For a seamless walking experience, refer to the AllTrails map provided below to guide you through the trail!

Conclude your day with a picturesque sunset, followed by dinner in town, before retreating for a restful night!

Day 3: Stop #1 - Foxglove Spire Gardens along Bellbird Scenic Drive

Check out from your hotel and set off on the Bellbird Scenic Drive. This route winds through verdant forests, offering stunning vistas. Your first stop is Foxglove Spire Gardens, a beautifully curated garden with vibrant blooms and quaint pathways, perfect for a peaceful morning stroll. You'd need around an hour to explore the gardens. Although we had to skip the gardens due to personal reasons, this attraction comes highly recommended by many.

Note: On your way to Foxglove Spire Gardens, consider a brief 15-minute detour to the fascinating Camel Rock in Wallaga Lake. This unique rock formation, resembling a camel in repose, offers a quirky and memorable stop, perfect for a quick photo opportunity or a moment to appreciate the area's natural beauty. If time permits, it's a detour well worth taking!

Day 3: Stop #2 - Tilba Tilba & Central Tilba
​
Spend the rest of your morning exploring the historic villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba, known for their well-preserved heritage buildings and artisanal shops.

Browse for unique souvenirs, sample local cheeses, and enjoy the delicious milkshakes at Tilba Dairy. Central Tilba's lively atmosphere makes it an excellent place for a leisurely lunch at one of its charming cafés. While Central Tilba is more vibrant, both villages offer unique experiences worth exploring.

Day 3: Last Stop - Water Tower Lookout & Bellbrook Farm Loop Walk

After lunch, leave your car in Central Tilba and take a short walk to Water Tower Lookout for sweeping countryside views.

Just head uphill past the Bellbrook Farm signpost towards the water tower and be mindful to close the gates you open to prevent wayward animals from entering the tower precinct. Exercise caution near the edge, as the lookout is unfenced and can be slippery when wet!

​Afterward, embark on the Bellbrook Farm Loop Walk, a 2.6-km medium-grade loop trail that weaves through the foothills of Gulaga (Mount Dromedary), blending natural beauty with local history. Navigate your journey with confidence using the AllTrails map below, your handy guide for this scenic walk!

After the walk, complete your Bellbird Scenic Drive via the Old Highway until you reach the Princes Highway. From there, make your way back to Narooma or head home, carrying cherished memories of a weekend well spent!
Note: If time permits, make your way to Tilba Valley Winery, a charming destination nestled in the picturesque countryside. Here, you can indulge in a delightful wine-tasting experience, sampling a range of locally produced wines that capture the essence of the region. In addition to wine tasting, the winery offers a delectable dining experience with a menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore their cellar door, where you can purchase your favourite wines to take home as a memento of your visit. Whether you're a wine connoisseur or simply looking for a serene spot to unwind, Tilba Valley Winery provides a perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence amidst stunning natural surroundings.​
