This unique association of mid-century design and pristine wilderness is a testament to Sydney’s ability to seamlessly integrate the old and the new, the man-made and the natural. It’s a day of discovery that will leave you with a lasting impression of Sydney’s cultural and natural treasures.
Stop #1 - Rose Seidler House: A Mid-century Marvel
Our day began with a visit to the Rose Seidler House, a pristine representation of mid-century modernism, managed by MHNSW (Museums of History New South Wales).
Rose Seidler House stands as a testament to pioneering modernist architecture, designed by the renowned architect Harry Seidler in the 1940s and named after his mother. Nestled in the leafy suburb of Wahroonga, it’s only a 45-minute drive away from Sydney’s CBD. Its avant-garde design boldly embodies the principles of Bauhaus and International Style, characterized by clean lines, geometric shapes, and a seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The house showcases a minimalist aesthetic, featuring an open-plan layout, floor-to-ceiling windows that invite abundant natural light, and a cantilevered structure that effortlessly floats above the landscape. The use of modern materials such as glass, steel, and concrete during its time showcases innovation while emphasizing functionality and simplicity. The house offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the 1950s, featuring modern conveniences that were ahead of their time. With its striking presence amidst the natural surroundings, Rose Seidler House remains an iconic masterpiece that continues to inspire and influence modern architecture. Don’t miss the chance to delve into the house's narrative by watching the documentary downstairs before concluding your visit.
Stop #2 - Sphinx Memorial: A Tribute to Sacrifice and Valour
After we’d immersed ourselves in the architectural splendour of Rose Seidler House, it was time for us to embrace the natural world and the Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head Walk ended up being a fantastic way to continue our day of exploration. The walk commences at the Sphinx Memorial, nestled within the serene Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.
Note: You will also need to pay park entry fees to enter Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Visit NSW National Parks' website for more information about the park entry fees and options.
The Sphinx Memorial, taking its name from the Sphinx Rock, stands as a solemn tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Australian soldiers who served during World War II. It was originally built by returned servicemen and dedicated in 1925 as a war memorial. Over time, it has become a revered site where visitors can reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of the soldiers who served their country during a period of great global turmoil. The setting is both peaceful and emotional, with the native bushland creating a backdrop of contemplation. The Sphinx Memorial not only serves as a starting point for the picturesque adventure that comes next but also reminds us of the courage and resilience of the past, setting the tone for a day filled with reverence and awe.

A few things to keep in mind prior to commencing this walk.
- The Sphinx Memorial carpark closes at 5.30pm Monday to Sunday.
- There are NO toilet facilities in Sphinx Memorial and while there is a water fountain in Sphinx Memorial, it didn't work when we visited so we'd strongly recommend carrying ample water for this walk. Toilet facilities are available at the Waterside Bistro (more on this below) as well as at Bobbin Head, which is a 500m (one-way) detour from the Waterside Bistro.
- The gate between Empire Marina and the entrance to the walking track closes at 4pm. Walkers on the track can exit through this gate to the marina at any time, but will not be able to enter through the gate to start a walk on Warimoo track or Bobbin Head trail after 4pm.
We recommend commencing your walk in an anticlockwise direction from Sphinx Memorial as this choice offers an optimal sequence of scenic highlights and a gradual descent towards Bobbin Head. As you traverse this picturesque loop, embrace the serenity of the bushland. Be prepared to encounter various highlights, including peaceful creek crossings, panoramic lookout points, and native wildlife sightings. The trail gradually descends towards Bobbin Head, offering breathtaking views of Cowan Creek along the way.
Once you arrive at the intersection leading to Bobbin Head, extend your adventure to the Waterside Bistro. This charming eatery, nestled within Empire Marina Bobbin Head amidst the pristine landscapes of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, serves as an ideal pit stop for a well-deserved lunch. Alternatively, if you've packed your own lunch, the walk also offers numerous scenic spots overlooking Cowan Creek, where you can leisurely indulge in your meal, fully embracing the serenity of the surroundings. Embrace the sounds of the bush, soak in the panoramic views, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the local wildlife while enjoying your meal.
After a delicious meal and a moment of relaxation at Waterside Bistro, resume your loop walk, retracing your steps back towards the Sphinx Memorial. Take the opportunity to appreciate different vantage points and hidden gems along the return journey.
Remember to carry ample water, sunscreen, and any essentials for your walk. With its blend of historical significance, stunning landscapes, and inviting lunch spots, the Sphinx Memorial to Bobbin Head loop walk promises an enriching and rewarding experience for nature enthusiasts.
