Getting there

Cathedral Rock Track is nestled within the picturesque Cathedral Rock National Park near Ebor, New South Wales, close to Barokee Campground. Accessible from various directions, including routes from Armidale or Coffs Harbour, the journey along Waterfall Way Drive is as enchanting as the hike itself. It's important to note that the 8-kilometer stretch of Round Mountain Rd off Waterfall Way Drive leading to Barokee Campground is on an unsealed road. While 2WD vehicles can navigate this road, especially during dry weather, it's advisable to have a 4WD, particularly in wet conditions, for a smoother and safer journey.

At the 2.5-kilometer mark, you will reach a crucial junction on Cathedral Rock Track. Here, you can either continue straight to complete the loop back to Barokee Campground or turn right towards the Summit. Opting for the summit trail, be prepared for a challenging 500-meter (one-way) stretch, graded at Level 5. This segment entails rock-hopping, clambering over boulders, and negotiating crevices, demanding both agility and focus.

The final stretch of the Cathedral Rock Track adds an extra thrill as hikers encounter a couple of boulders fitted with chains for climbing assistance. These chains, permanently anchored onto the rocks, provide stability and support as you ascend, adding an exciting element to the adventure. Just be careful while climbing the rocks by holding the chains, and we recommend wearing hand gloves and sturdy shoes to avoid any accidents or injuries.

Upon conquering these boulders, you're welcomed by the stunning Cathedral Rock Lookout, offering unparalleled views that stretch as far as the eye can see. From here, take in the majestic beauty of the nearby Round Mountain, the highest point of the New England Tablelands, standing at 1584 meters tall! This breathtaking vantage point rewards your efforts with a sense of accomplishment, making the entire journey truly unforgettable.

After soaking in the magnificent views at Cathedral Rock Lookout, it's time to carefully trace back your steps along the trail. As you begin your descent from the awe-inspiring Cathedral Rock Lookout, it's crucial to stay vigilant and follow the trail signs diligently. Our own experience highlighted the importance of this, as we initially veered onto the wrong path and had to backtrack for a few hundred meters before realizing our mistake. Descend with caution from the boulders and follow the path back to the junction.

Once at the junction, turn right to continue on the Grade 4 track, which offers a more leisurely stroll compared to the summit climb. At approximately 300m, make sure to keep to your right at the junction to stay on the track to Barokee Campground; the trail to your left at the junction leads to Native Dog Creek Campground, so be sure to avoid it. As you meander through the scenic bushland, take in the sights and sounds of the natural surroundings, enjoying the tranquility of the park. Follow the track until you arrive back at Barokee Campground carpark, completing your rewarding adventure on Cathedral Rock Track. As you walk, don't forget to take time to admire the unique rock formations that make the trail even more captivating!
