Getting there
Hobart is easily accessible from various parts of Australia and beyond. The city is serviced by Hobart International Airport, located about 20 minutes from the city centre. Direct flights operate regularly from major cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide, making it a convenient destination for both domestic and international travellers. If you prefer a more scenic journey, consider taking the Spirit of Tasmania ferry, which departs from Melbourne and docks in Devonport. From there, it’s a 3-hour drive south to Hobart, allowing you to enjoy Tasmania’s stunning landscapes along the way. Once in Hobart, you can explore the city on foot or rent a car to venture beyond into the island's wild beauty.
Day 1 - Morning: Old Hobart Town, Richmond
Start your adventure by stepping back in time at Old Hobart Town, a fascinating miniature marvel that brings the early days of colonial Hobart to life. Located in Richmond, this meticulously crafted model showcases Hobart as it was in the 1820s, down to the smallest detail.
You’ll find yourself wandering through tiny streets lined with period-correct buildings, ships docked in the harbour, and even miniature townspeople going about their daily lives. This attraction is not only fun but also educational, giving you a unique insight into Hobart’s early days as a penal colony and its transformation into a thriving city. The interactive displays and informative plaques make it a perfect stop for history buffs and families alike. Plus, Richmond itself is a charming village full of boutique shops, cafes, and its iconic bridge — Australia’s oldest stone bridge, adding to the historical vibe of your visit.
Day 1 - Afternoon: Richmond Gaol
After lunch, continue your historical journey in Richmond with a visit to Richmond Gaol.
Step inside Richmond Gaol and prepare to be transported back to Australia’s convict era. As one of the oldest and best-preserved convict prisons in the country, Richmond Gaol offers a haunting glimpse into the harsh conditions faced by early prisoners. Wander through the original cells, solitary confinement rooms, and chain gang areas, each with displays that tell the stories of the infamous criminals, including bushrangers and convicts, who were once imprisoned here. The gaol’s thick stone walls and iron-barred doors evoke a sense of the struggles faced by those incarcerated. Be sure to visit the women’s quarters and learn about the lives of female convicts and the challenges they endured. This immersive experience is a must for anyone keen to understand Tasmania's convict past and its role in shaping the island’s identity.

Day 2: South East Cape Hike
Day two is all about embracing Tasmania’s wild and remote beauty. Start early from Hobart as you set off for the South East Cape hike, Australia’s southernmost point. This coastal trail takes you through pristine wilderness, offering jaw-dropping views of the Southern Ocean. The hike is challenging but rewarding, with rugged cliffs, windswept beaches, and the thrill of standing at the edge of the world. Remember to pack plenty of water and a camera to capture this once-in-a-lifetime experience! You can read more about this adventure via our itinerary post below.
After returning to Cockle Creek from the adventurous hike to South East Cape, head to Adams Point Whale Lookout, just a 5-minute drive from Cockle Creek Campground.
This scenic vantage point offers stunning views over the waters of Recherche Bay and the Southern Ocean, where, if you’re lucky, you might spot migrating whales. The lookout is particularly famous for sightings of southern right whales, which frequent the area between May and October. As you soak in the coastal beauty, you’ll also notice the striking life-size Southern Right Whale calf sculpture perched at the lookout, which serves as a reminder of Tasmania’s whaling history and celebrates the species’ recovery. It’s a serene and reflective spot to admire nature’s wonders while learning more about the region’s rich maritime heritage. Whether you see whales or not, the view alone is worth the short walk to Adams Point!
As the sun sets, head to Cockle Creek or Boltons Green Campgrounds, two of the southernmost camping spots in Australia, and set up your tent. If you’re lucky enough, you might secure a spot right next to the beach, just like we did! Falling asleep to the sound of the waves and waking up to stunning coastal views is an experience you won’t forget. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in the beauty and serenity of Tasmania’s remote wilderness.
This is also one of the few spots where you can witness the awe-inspiring Aurora Australis (Southern Lights!). Even when the sky was cloudy during our visit, we did catch a glimpse of this spectacular natural light show shortly after midnight. It’s a magical experience you won’t forget! If camping isn’t your style, there are also cosy accommodations in nearby Strathblane or Dover, which will still keep you not far from your tomorrow's adventure!
Day 3 - Morning: Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs
Start your final day with a journey underground at Hastings Caves.
Be sure to arrive at the Hastings Cave Visitor Centre at least 45 minutes prior to your tour to purchase/collect your tickets and allow time to drive to the cave car park. The self-drive from the visitor centre to the cave carpark takes approximately 20 minutes. You will then take the short walk through the forest to the cave entrance so plan your timing accordingly! The guide will meet you at the cave entrance at the specified tour time. The guided tour of Newdegate Cave takes about 45 minutes and showcases spectacular limestone formations, including stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years. The caves are a cool, dark escape, and the tour is full of interesting geological and historical facts.
After your tour, relax in the naturally heated Thermal Springs Pool, a soothing way to unwind after your morning’s adventure. Don’t miss the short Platypus Walk or the longer Hot Springs Forest Walk, both of which start and finish near the pool.
Day 3 - Afternoon: Battery Point Historic Walk
On your way back to Hobart, enjoy lunch before heading to Salamanca for the Battery Point Historic Walk. The Battery Point Historic Walk is a charming stroll through history, passing by beautifully preserved 19th-century homes and landmarks. The walk takes about two hours at a leisurely pace, starting at Kelly’s Steps in Salamanca and finishing at Princes Park. Park your car near Tasman Memorial before heading to Kelly's Steps by walk.
The walk begins with the iconic Kelly’s Steps, a steep staircase connecting Salamanca Place to Battery Point. Named after Captain James Kelly, a sea captain from the 1800s, the steps offer a physical and symbolic link between Hobart’s bustling waterfront and its historic suburb. As you make your way along Hampden Road, Battery Point’s main street, you’ll pass by beautiful heritage buildings, including the Narryna Heritage Museum. This former merchant’s house is filled with colonial furniture and artefacts that provide a glimpse into 19th-century life. One of the highlights of the walk is Arthur Circus, a charming circle of cottages dating back to the early days of Hobart. These cottages, originally built for officers of the British garrison, have been lovingly restored and now serve as private residences. With kunanyi/Mount Wellington in the background, Arthur Circus offers a postcard-perfect scene that feels like stepping back in time.
Stop by the Shipwright’s Arms Hotel for a taste of history and local life. This historic pub is a favourite spot for Hobart’s yachting community, offering hearty meals and a cosy atmosphere that reflects its seafaring past. Finally, the walk leads you to Battery Square and Princes Park, once part of Hobart’s coastal defences. From here, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the River Derwent and the finish line of the famous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. It’s a fitting end to a walk that celebrates Hobart’s maritime and colonial heritage, all set against the backdrop of Tasmania’s stunning natural beauty. With its well-preserved streetscapes, colonial buildings, and a deep connection to Hobart’s past, the Battery Point Historic Walk is a must for anyone wanting to explore the city’s history on foot.
Pro Tip: If you’re in Hobart on a Saturday, don’t miss the famous Salamanca Market. Open from 8.30 am to 3 pm, this lively outdoor market is a must-visit! With over 300 stalls, it’s the perfect spot to pick up unique Tasmanian art, crafts, and gourmet local produce. Whether you’re browsing handmade jewellery, tasting delicious local honey, or listening to live music, Salamanca Market captures the vibrant heart of Hobart.
Day 3 - Evening: Sunset at kunanyi/Mount Wellington
End your adventure with a drive to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, where you’ll witness one of the most breathtaking sunsets in Tasmania. The panoramic views over Hobart, the River Derwent, and beyond are the perfect way to reflect on your trip. If the skies are clear, you might even catch a glimpse of the stars above as the day fades into night. Wrap up warm, as it can get chilly at the summit!
This 3-day Hobart adventure is the perfect balance of history, nature, and wonder. Whether you’re captivated by the miniature world of Old Hobart Town, standing at the edge of Australia at South East Cape, or witnessing the Aurora Australis at Cockle Creek, there’s something here for every kind of traveller!
