Katoomba Falls Night-lit Walk
The Night-Lit Walk spans approximately 1.5km and takes up to 60 minutes to complete, with starting points located at either the main Katoomba Cascades carpark or beside the old Katoomba Kiosk, which are just 1.5 hours' drive west of Sydney. Katoomba Station is approximately a 30-minute walk (2.2km) away, or a short 5-minute drive. Plan to arrive at the carpark around dusk, allowing time for the day to transition into nightfall before beginning the walk.
Before setting off, ensure you have adequate footwear, water, and a personal light source such as a flashlight or head torch. Take caution around cliff edges, especially with children, and be mindful of your own abilities. A map of the walk is provided below - courtesy: Blue Mountains City Council.
The Night-Lit Walk in Katoomba offers a unique viewing experience of the area's remarkable natural features. Wander along the illuminated trails, where strategically placed lanterns and lighting showcase outstanding natural features such as Orphan Rock, Witches Leap, Katoomba Falls and Katoomba Cascades. For those seeking accessibility, a 280m paved pathway leads to Cliff View Lookout, providing wheelchair-friendly access to breathtaking views of Orphan Rock and Reid's Plateau. Please note that the LED lighting along the walking trail illuminates at dusk and stays on until 11 PM. However, the floodlights highlighting the key attractions switch off at 10:30 PM.
As you explore, rest assured that environmental considerations are at the forefront, with carefully planned lighting minimizing light pollution for wildlife and local residents. With energy-efficient LEDs illuminating the footpaths and main focal points, visitors can explore responsibly while immersing themselves in the beauty of the surroundings. Further details about the walk can be found on Blue Mountains City Council's website.
Note: We recommend bringing extra layers or a light jacket, even if you're planning to do this walk in summer. We undertook the walk in mid-November and found it considerably chilly for late spring/early summer.

Embarking on the hike to Minnehaha Falls offers a double delight, promising not only the breathtaking sight of the waterfall itself but also the allure of a refreshing swimming hole, perfect for spending an entire day immersed in nature's embrace. However, with the carpark often bustling with activity, an early start is advisable to secure a spot. While the water may remain chilly until later in the day, the invigorating experience is well worth the initial chill. The journey itself proves delightful, with several creek crossings and serene views of the surrounding waterways guiding the way.
Approximately 950m from the trailhead, a captivating viewpoint emerges, allowing hikers to marvel at the splendor of the waterfall in all its glory.
The final 350m presents a challenge, as it involves navigating a steep set of stairs, both descending and ascending. For those seeking to avoid this strenuous ascent, retracing the steps back to the carpark via the same trail after soaking in the majestic views from the viewpoint offers an equally rewarding experience.
Continuing the last 350m of the trail towards Minnehaha Falls offers an exciting opportunity to get closer to the majestic waterfall. As you approach, the powerful cascade captivates your senses, with its impressive display of nature's force. Upon arrival, take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking sight and feel the refreshing mist on your skin. If you're up for it, the nearby swimming hole provides a perfect spot to cool off and enjoy a dip in the natural pool. Alternatively, you can find rocky spots along the water's edge to relax and take in the stunning views of the waterfall, whether you're swimming or not.
After spending time soaking in the beauty of Minnehaha Falls, simply retrace your steps back along the trail to the carpark, cherishing the memories of this unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Near the carpark, you'll find a playground and picnic tables, perfect for unwinding after your walk before heading home.
