Getting there
Warragamba Dam is located slightly over an hour's drive west of Sydney. Ample free parking is available on-site, and the facilities include drinking water, picnic shelters, toilets, dedicated viewing areas, and a Visitor Centre. You can find more details about the facilities and timings on WaterNSW's website.
Upon arriving and parking our car, we headed to the viewing platform near the Warragamba Dam Visitor Centre. The platform offers excellent vistas of the upstream dam wall, Lake Burragorang, and the surrounding landscapes. The views were nothing short of spectacular!
Inside the visitor centre, we took our time exploring the exhibits and interactive displays. The centre provides fascinating insights into the dam's history and showcases the impressive engineering behind it. Don't miss out on the engaging kids' activities as well! Despite holding four Sydney Harbours' worth of water with three million tonnes of concrete, the atmosphere at Warragamba Dam remains calm and peaceful—a truly breathtaking sight!
Afterwards, we embarked on the self-guided Wall and Terraces Walk, as outlined on WaterNSW's website.
Afterwards, we embarked on the self-guided Wall and Terraces Walk, as outlined on WaterNSW's website.
Along the walk, we stopped at various lookout points, completely captivated by the awe-inspiring vistas and the dam's majestic presence. Please note that the Wall and Terraces Walk is available only on weekends and public holidays between 10am and 4pm, excluding Christmas Day and Good Friday.
For visits on other days, the Self-guided Heritage Walk provides an alternative way to explore the beautiful surroundings. Take your time to admire the rich heritage and natural beauty that envelops Warragamba Dam.
Following our exploration, we returned to Haviland Park, where we enjoyed a delightful lunch on one of the picnic tables. Afterwards, we headed to the Eighteenth Street Lookout (refer map below), a few minutes drive from the dam through the Warragamba township.
The Eighteenth Street Lookout is open daily from 10am to 5pm and provides a view of the auxiliary spillway and a distant view of Warragamba Dam wall.
Next, we made our way to the nearby Rock Lookout, a hidden gem that offers captivating vistas. Please note that the last few kilometres of Fairlight Road leading to The Rock Lookout is an unsealed road, however we didn't have any problems navigating it with our 2WD.
This scenic lookout gifted us with sweeping panoramic views of the Nepean River and the surrounding landscape. The views from the lookout were truly spectacular and left us breathless!
Please be advised that the Rock Lookout does not have a protective fence, so it is important to exercise caution when navigating the area and being mindful of the rocks. Stay alert and enjoy the mesmerizing views while keeping your well-being in mind!
As the day slowly waned, we reluctantly bid farewell to Warragamba Dam and the Rock Lookout, carrying with us the cherished and everlasting memories of our visit. We made our way back to our car and headed back home!
